About the company

One of the oldest food companies in all of Ireland, Flahavan's have been milling oats on the shores of the River Mahon, Co.Waterford for over 230 years. The family business, now run in the seventh generation, specialises in milling local oats and creating new oat-based products responding to the evolving health and lifestyle needs of their customers.

Committed to local sourcing, all oats milled in the historic Kilmacthomas mill are delivered by a panel of growers located no further than 60 miles away. The unique milling process, refined over centuries, gives the products a unique taste and texture, making Flahavan's one of Ireland's most-loved oat brands known for its tradition, integrity, and distinct Irishness.

Key Sustainability Commitments

Spotlight Target Area: Product Health and Nutrition

Flahavan's believe that the health of their customers is paramount, and the business strives to support this through the development of nutritious and healthy products. In 2022, the member added five new 'better for you' products to their range, more than doubling their milestone target. These products included high-protein and immunity boost products as well as high-fibre porridge pots.

Additionally, Flahavan's have added 30 new healthy recipes to their website blog, promoting the health benefits of oats to the wider public. As a result, the business reinforced the importance of a healthy and well-balanced diet to their customers, introducing new products as well as ways to use the nutritious oats in recipes at home.

Spotlight Target Area: Community Engagement
Sustainability has always been a major part of the Flahavan’s story. Since the 1780s,
when the original waterwheel drove the mill, there has been a company-wide
commitment to working in harmony with nature and minimising the company’s
impact on its environment and community.
E Flahavan’s and Sons supports its local community whenever possible – the company
has been a main sponsor of the West Waterford Festival of Food for many years; it
regularly donates product to the Waterford Food Bank and other local charities; and
it’s held more than 15 events including online classes and brand partnerships. The
company provides product to support the Waterford Senior GAA teams, as well as the
Dublin City Marathon among other sporting events across the country.
