Spotlight Target Area: Waste
Codd Mushrooms recognises sustainability as a key component of business
performance and is committed to minimising its impact on the environment. A key
area which it has focused upon in its current sustainability plan (2018-2022) is the
reduction of waste. To reduce the level of general waste sent to landfill, the company
implemented initiatives to reduce unnecessary packaging generated from its label
suppliers, invested in the research and sourcing of compostable film and punnets, and
introduced a product line in cardboard punnets. As of 2020, the company achieved
a 10.6% decrease in general waste sent to landfill. Due to strong initial success, Codd
Mushrooms readjusted its target for wastage reduction of rejected mushrooms from
22% to 51% by 2022. In 2020, 80% ahead of its current target, recorded a decrease
of 83.6% kg/kg from baseline per unit of output. This points to an extremely strong
performance, particularly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which created an influx in
demand from retailers, who require product prepacks, and a decrease in demand from
food service, who receive produce in bulk.
