Kepak is one of Ireland's leading meat producers with 12 manufacturing facilities across Ireland and the UK, employing over 4,500 people with a turnover of €1.5bn. Meat craft and sustainability are key pillars of the company's heritage, which has grown from humble beginnings as a butcher shop founded in Dublin's Liberties in 1979. For over 50 years, farmers have trusted Kepak to process and market their livestock in a respectful way. Kepak believe that sustainability should not be a sideline effort. It should be part of everything it does, a way of doing the job every day. As a founding member of Origin Green, Kepak acknowledge that there has never been a more crucial time to act against climate change. As a business, Kepak commits to working with industry peers to ensure it minimises its impact on the environment, whilst safeguarding animal welfare and producer livelihoods.
Spotlight Target Area: Energy/ Emissions
Kepak Group focus on the reduction of energy usage across their sites, aiming to decrease their energy consumption per unit output by 2% year on year against their 2018 baseline. In 2022, they achieved a reduction of 7% compared to the previous year, placing them well ahead of their milestone target of the year.
The newly instated onsite resource efficiency champions were tasked to plan and carry out new projects within Kepak Group's Energy Management Framework Roadmap, also established in 2022. Energy-saving measures included reviewing new technology options for processing facilities, installation of LED lights and new fridge compressors as well as building new routines amongst the team to reduce energy intensity. As a result, the member improved their energy efficiency, reduced their carbon emissions, and decreased their pressure on the national grid.
