Spotlight Target Area: Waste
Raw materials waste, such as broken mussels, are a large recurring waste stream for Connemara Seafoods. While they are using an aerobic digestive system that breaks down organic matter, the business aims to reduce the overall waste produced throughout their business processes to prevent mussels being composted unnecessarily. In the past year, the member achieved a 64.2% reduction in compost waste per unit output.
Connemara Seafoods credits their targeted research efforts and staff training on waste monitoring for the successful reductions. Additionally, the business sourced new industrial markets for slightly imperfect products which allowed for higher utilisation of their harvests. As a result, the member reduced their carbon footprint, preventing usable products from entering the waste stream.
