Boann Distillery is an independent, family-owned distillery located just outside the historic town of Drogheda, Co. Meath in Ireland's Boyne Valley, with Bru na Boinne, a World Heritage Site, including Newgrange, only 5km away. When the first spirit flowed from the custom copper pot stills in Winter 2019, Boann Distillery reintroduced the art of distillation to Drogheda for the first time in 160 years. At Boann Distillery traditional brewing and distilling methods are combined with modern technology to produce the most unique single pot still spirit. Boann Distillery is the home of the award-winning Silks Irish Dry Gin and the Whistler Irish Whiskey range

Key Sustainability Commitments

Spotlight Target Area: Water

Water is a significant resource required for a successful distilling process, being mainly used for cooling the distillate and cleaning of equipment. Within their

2021-2025 Origin Green Plan, Boan Distillery set out to significantly improve their water efficiency, following regular monitoring and measuring exercises on-site. In the past year, the member achieved a 13.3% reduction of water used per litre of pure alcohol produced, placing them 41% ahead of their milestone target for the year.

The improved water efficiency was mainly attributed to reducing the temperature in the cooling towers and reviewing the cleaning processes to minimise water wastage. Additionally, regular review and maintenance activities prevented leaks across the site. As a result, Boann Distillery strengthened their commitment to sustainable business practices across the distillery. A water charter was created alongside training.

Notably, they adjusted their targets for the remainder of their plan to improve water efficiency by 60% compared to their 2020 baseline, following the industry targets set in the 2022 published Sustainability Roadmap from the Irish Whiskey Association.
