About the company

Barry John Sausages is a family run gourmet sausage manufacturing business from Cavan. Barry has been making award winning sausages for nearly 3 decades now. He began making sausages at a young age in 1994 in his father's artisan butcher shop, then in 2013, to expand his business he opened up his own sustainable manufacturing premises in Poles, Co Cavan.

What makes Barry John Sausages unique is the imaginative range of unusual flavoured pork sausages they create. Such as, Spice Bag / Bacon, Mushroom & Black Pudding / Cheddar Cheese & Chilli Flakes and not to forget the Chocolate Chip & Honeycomb sensational one. All of the pork they use is from 100% PQAS certified suppliers and they source as much locally produced ingredients as possible.

Barry John Sausages supplies supermarkets, individual stores and butcher shops around Cavan, Meath, Longford, West Meath, Donegal & Fermanagh. In 2020 they went online and can now supply all of Ireland directly to the consumer through their online shop.

Spotlight Target Area: Packaging


Barry John Sausages has embarked on an ambitious mission to enhance its sustainability efforts by targeting the replacement of non-recyclable black PET

tubs and black polystyrene trays with eco-friendly alternatives by the end of 2023. Recognising the environmental impact of their packaging choices, the company has taken significant steps towards achieving this sustainability goal.

In 2022, Barry John Sausages proactively engaged with all their customers presenting their plan to switch to 100% recyclable clear trays and flow-wrap packaging.


Encouragingly, all customers embraced this transition, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable practices. The company initiated the phasing out of polystyrene trays, replacing them with clear trays. Notably, the packaging for their jumbo flavoured sausages, a significant product in their portfolio, is now 100% recyclable, featuring clear trays, flow-wrap film, and outer cardboard sleeves.


Approach to Sustainability
In 2022, Barry John Sausages successfully began the process of phasing out
black plastic catering tubs, opting for clear plastic alternatives, which are
more environmentally friendly and recyclable. While they explore
the possibility of cardboard boxes for their catering range, they remain
committed to finding the most suitable and eco-friendly packaging
solution. As part of their 2021-2025 Origin Green plan, the member has
reported on six targets, scoring exemplary in their Supplier Certification,
Packaging, Energy / Emissions, and Community Engagement targets.
